To some depth, wookieepedia explains this faction better than I ever could. This is why the link shall go here, but I will explain some of the Jedi purpose.
The Jedi have called themselves guardians of peace. They carry those little glowing sticks called lightsabers and they use a mystical force called... the Force. Dun, dun, dun... They claim to follow the Force. The Force is their guidance, it is their friend and not their servant. The Jedi serve the Force and not the other way around. This is the vague idea. The rest can be found here: starwars.wikia.com/wiki/JediIn the present age of the Jedi (on this board) they are currently guardians, peace makers and negotiators more than war fighters and warriors of all things. That is 'unhealthy' to quite a few Jedi. Why is this? Well, the Sith now work as the bloodlust side of the fusion that brought Jedi and Sith together. Why fight a war when there are perfectly able and willing warriors to fight it for you? You can create peace and justice, not detruction and mayhem.
